History of its establishment
Pondok Pesantren Tebuireng was founded by K.H. Hasyim Asy’ari in 1899 AD. This Islamic boarding school was founded after he returned from his wanderings studying at various leading educational institutions and in the land of Mecca, to practice the knowledge he had acquired.
Tebuireng was formerly the name of a small hamlet in the Cukir area, Diwek District, Jombang Regency, East Java. It is located eight kilometers south of the city of Jombang, right on the edge of the Jombang-Kediri highway. According to local stories, the name Tebuireng comes from “kebo ireng” (black buffalo). Another version says that the name Tebuireng was taken from the name of a Majapahit royal official who converted to Islam and then lived around the hamlet.
Tebuireng Hamlet was once known as a den of gambling, robbery, theft, prostitution and other negative behavior. However, since the arrival of K.H. Hasyim Asy’ari and his students, gradually the pattern of life of the hamlet community changed for the better and the negative behavior of the community in Tebuireng was completely eroded. The beginning of K.H. Hasyim Asy’ari’s da’wah activities were centered in a building consisting of two small rooms made of woven bamboo (Javanese: gedek), a former shop measuring approximately 6 x 8 meters, which he bought from a puppeteer. One room was used for religious study activities, while the other was used as a residence with his wife, Nyai Khodijah.
The NU organization is spread across all provinces in Indonesia with more than 400 branches, but the NU regional administrators whose business activities are quite real include those in East Java, Central Java, West Java, DKI Jakarta, North Sumatra, South Kalimantan, and South Sulawesi. Currently, the existence of the Tebuireng Islamic Boarding School has developed well and is increasingly receiving attention from the wider community.
KH Hasyim Asy’ari participated in expelling the invaders from the homeland. One of them was seen when he issued a jihad resolution that moved the community to expel the invaders.
Education system
Along with the passage of time, the number of students who came to study increased and became more diverse. This fact has encouraged the Tebuireng Islamic Boarding School to make several changes to its policies related to education. As with Islamic boarding schools at the time of its founding, the initial teaching system used was the sorogan method (students read the yellow book material themselves in front of the teacher), as well as the weton or bandongan or halqah method (kyai reads the book and the student gives meaning). All forms of teaching are not differentiated in class levels. The increase in education level is indicated by the change of books that are khatam (finished) studied and followed by students. The teaching materials are also specifically about Islamic religious knowledge, sharia knowledge and Arabic.
The change in the education system in this Islamic boarding school was first carried out by Kyai Hasyim Asy’ari in 1919, namely by implementing the madrasi (classical) system by establishing the Madrasah Salafiyah Syafi’iyah. The teaching system was presented in stages in two levels, namely Shifir Awal and Shifir Tsani.
In 1929, another renewal was carried out, namely by including general subjects into the teaching curriculum structure. This was an action that had never been taken by other Islamic boarding schools at that time. There was a reaction from the guardians of the students, even the ulama from other Islamic boarding schools. This is understandable considering that general subjects at that time were considered as evil, Dutch culture and the like. Until there were guardians of students who moved their sons to other boarding schools. However, this madrasah continued because the Tebuireng Islamic Boarding School considered that general knowledge would be very necessary for graduates of the Islamic boarding school.
